Previous versions of the Developmental Profile have seen tremendous success evaluating five key areas of children's functioning—adaptive behavior, social-emotional, cognitive, communication, and physical. The DP-3 was developed to evaluate children from birth through 12 years of age.

The DP-3 offers two administration options. The first is an interview form on which a parent or guardian answers questions about the child being evaluated. The second is a parent/caregiver checklist that contains the same item content as the interview form but makes it possible for the parent or caregiver to retrieve essential information without the supervision of a professional. The assessment can be completed in 20 to 40 minutes, and scoring and interpretation can be completed electronically.
The normative sample for the DP-3 included 2,216 children ages 0 to 12. The sample was drawn from major regions of the United States and is demographically representative of American children regarding ethnicity, geography, and socioeconomic status.
