Read New Study: Comparing the M-PULSE Inventory and the MMPI-2
The M-PULSE Inventory is an effective pre-conditional and post-conditional offer screening instrument designed for law enforcement officer selection. It can be used either pre-offer to identify a candidate’s liability potential or post-offer as part of a total assessment battery that includes historical, interview, and observational data.
The M-PULSE Inventory produces results for 18 Liability Scales that help predict officer misconduct; 16 Empirical Scales that gauge attitudes, values, and beliefs; and 10 California POST Scales that measure facets of personality that are of prime importance to police work. There are also 2 Validity Scales to assess response bias and a Supplementary Scale that assesses potential for substance abuse problems.

Profile Reports summarize the results of an individual administration, providing scores for all scales.
Follow-Up Reports provide an opportunity to track officers’ conduct since their critical M-PULSE Inventory assessments were completed.
Results are produced for 18 liability scales which help predict officer misconduct, and 16 empirical scales that measure attitudes, values and beliefs. The M-PULSE Inventory also includes two validity scales-Impression Management and Test Attitude that when elevated indicate if a candidate is trying to make a good impression or has a negative attitude toward the testing process.
Validity
Research with the M-PULSE Inventory shows that overall approximately 86% (average overall classification accuracy across the 18 Liability areas) of the liability cases could be predicted correctly using M-PULSE Inventory items. The M-PULSE Inventory normative data includes 2,000 cases that are geographically representative and includes data from 44 states within the United States. The M-PULSE Inventory scales are statistically reliable, meaning that there is a high degree of accuracy in the assessment. Cronbach’s alpha is the most common statistic used for assessing reliability. Alpha values above .70 indicate very good reliability, and values above .80 indicate excellent reliability. All M-PULSE Inventory scale reliabilities are above .70 with the vast majority of the alpha values being higher than .80. The M-PULSE Inventory scales are valid since they are strongly related to outcome (i.e. officer misbehavior on the job after being hired).
