Overview

Overview

The MATRICS Consensus Cognitive Battery (MCCB) is a standardized battery for use with adults suffering from Schizophrenia and related disorders. This is the only measure of cognitive performance that was developed under NIMH contract with participation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. It is recommended for all clinical trials of cognition-enhancing drugs for Schizophrenia.

MCCB Computer Scoring Program

The MCCB Computer Scoring Program allows you to enter the primary raw scores into the program, and then generates the corresponding T-scores and percentiles, along with a graphic profile of the scores for each of the seven cognitive domains. The program also produces a data file to export data to statistical programs for group analysis.

Reliability and Validity

The individual neuropsychological tests that are included in the MCCB are scientifically validated. The technical manuals for each of the tests included in the MCCB offer extensive information about validity and reliability.

The MATRICS Neurocognition Committee concluded that the following properties were the most relevant for a test battery assessing cognitive change within patients with Schizophrenia and related disorders:

  • test-retest reliability
  • usefulness as a repeated measure
  • relationship to functional outcome
  • tolerability to respondents
  • practicality for test administrators

It was also determined that test-retest reliability, or short-term stability, was the most critical feature of a battery designed to be sensitive to cognitive change. Test-retest reliability of the MCCB was measured over a four-week period using alternate forms where possible. In all individual tests and all domains, the Pearson product-moment correlation (r) and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) showed a minimum stability of approximately .70. Many tests and domains demonstrated higher stability. Repeated measure analysis of the MCCB showed negligible or small practice effects on the individual tests when they were administered four weeks apart. The MCCB also demonstrated no significant floor or ceiling effects, indicating that it is well-suited to measure cognitive change over time, such as the improvements associated with medication or other interventions.

Further information about the reliability and validity of the MCCB is available in the MCCB Manual.

Normative data for the MCCB allows for age and gender correction; age, gender, and education correction; or no demographic correction. Both T-scores and percentiles are available.
