The SPM is an integrated system of rating scales that assesses sensory processing issues, praxis, and social participation in children 5 to 12 years old. It is a multi-environment assessment of elementary school-aged children, that helps form a complete picture of children's sensory functioning at home, school, and in the community in order to support identification and treatment.

The SPM consists of three separate forms: Home Form, Main Classroom Form, and School Environment Form.
SPM Home AutoScore™ Form and SPM Main Classroom AutoScore™ Form
The SPM Home form is completed by the child’s parent or home-based care provider, and provides an overview of the child’s sensory functioning at home. The SPM Main Classroom form is completed by the child’s primary classroom teacher, and provides an overview of the child’s sensory functioning at school. Both forms yield eight norm-referenced standard scores. The standard score for each scale enables classification of the child’s functioning into one of three interpretative ranges: Typical, Some Problems, or Definite Dysfunction. In addition, an Environment Difference score allows direct comparison of the child’s sensory functioning between home and school environments.
SPM School Environment Form
Completed by other school personnel who work with and observe the child, the form provides an overview of the child’s sensory functioning in six school environments outside the main classroom: Art Class, Music Class, Physical Education Class, Recess/ Playground, Cafeteria, and School Bus. Each environment has its own rating sheet that can be printed as needed from an unlimited-use CD. Each Rating Sheet is interpreted using a cut-off score for the environment to which it applies. Scores at or above cut-off point indicate that the child is experiencing an unusually high number of sensory processing problems in a given environment. This form cannot be used alone, and must always be administered in conjunction with the Main Classroom Form.
The Home and Main Classroom forms were standardized on the same population—a demographically representative sample of 1,051 typically developing children from kindergarten through sixth grade. A subsample of 306 children from the standardization sample was used to establish cut-off criteria for the School Environment Form. Additional data were collected on a clinical sample of 345 children.
