A norm-referenced measure of cognitive ability based on the cognitive/neuropsychological PASS theory

CAS 2™

Overview

Overview

Designed to measure cognitive processing abilities that are important for a broad range of differential diagnoses and instructional planning, the Cognitive Assessment System, Second Edition (CAS2) is a norm-referenced measure based on the well-researched cognitive/neuropsychological theory called PASS (Planning, Attention, Simultaneous, and Successive). It provides practitioners with a valid and reliable tool to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of children and adolescents in important areas of cognitive processing.

Key Features:

  • Authored by Dr. Jack Naglieri, Ph.D, J. P. Das, Ph.D, and Sam Goldstein, Ph.D, internationally recognized leaders in assessment development
  • Evaluates strengths and weaknesses in the cognitive processing of children and adolescents
  • Normative data sample represents the U.S. population
  • Offers validity with special populations including those with speech or language impairments, learning disabilities, gifted or talented designations, ADHD, anxiety disorder, and Asperger’s syndrome
  • Provides a new Spanish supplements kit

  • Attention
  • Simultaneous
  • Successive

The CAS2 Extended Battery has three subtests for each of the four PASS scales. The Core Battery includes two subtests from each of the four PASS scales. Each PASS scale as well as the CAS2 full scale yields a standard score with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. The CAS2 also yields five supplemental composite scores: Executive Function without Working Memory, Executive Function with Working Memory, Working Memory, Verbal Content, and Nonverbal Content. A visual versus auditory comparison is also provided.

Normative Data

Normative Data

The CAS2 comprises the following:

Administration and Scoring Manual. This manual provides general information, specific instructions for administering and scoring the subtests, norms tables, and interpretive tables.

Interpretive and Technical Manual. This manual presents the information needed to use the test, including a discussion of PASS theory and explanations of the test’s organization and development, as well as information on standardization, norming, reliability, validity, and interpretation of the CAS2.

Stimulus Books 1, 2, and 3. The Stimulus Books include all the subtest stimuli used during administration of the test. They provide the stimulus items for the Matrices, Verbal-Spatial Relations, Figure Memory, and Expressive Attention subtests.

Student Response Booklet. The CAS2 includes two age-based Student Response Booklets, one for ages 5 through 7 and one for ages 8 through 18. The booklets are intended for paper-and-pencil responses for the Planned Number Matching, Planned Codes, Planned Connections, Number Detection, and Receptive Attention subtests.

Figure Memory Response Book. This response book is intended for the paper-and-pencil responses to the Figure Memory subtest.

Scoring Templates. A spiral-bound booklet with scoring templates offers examiners a convenient aid for ease and accuracy in scoring Response Book pages.

Examiner Record Form. This provides space for recording responses for each subtest, as well as a summary of the scoring and permanent documentation of test results.

Red pencil. A red pencil, for use in subtests requiring written responses, is included in each CAS2 complete test kit.

NEW! Optional Spanish Supplements Package. An optional add-on package includes (a) a three-hole-punched Spanish translation of Chapters 1 through 3 of the Administration and Scoring Manual for insertion into the English three-ring binder, (b) a Spanish Expressive Attention and Verbal-Spatial Relations Stimulus Book, and (c) a pack of 10 Spanish CAS2 Examiner Record Forms.

The CAS2 offers two ways to administer and score depending on the needs or preference of the user. Whether it’s using the CAS2 online scoring and report system or a traditional handscored paper-and pencil format, there’s a solution that right for you.

The CAS2 Online Scoring and Report Writing program is an efficient way to do the following:

  • Convert CAS2 subtest raw scores into standard scores, percentile ranks, descriptive terms, and age equivalents
  • Generate PASS and Full Scale composite scores
  • Compare CAS2 subtest and PASS scale scores to identify significant intra-individual differences
  • Generate a PDF report of CAS2 performance
  • Provide intervention options

CAS2 Online Scoring and Report Writing first-time base subscription provides:

  • One-year unlimited online scoring and report access for up to five users

An add-on license provides access for up to five additional users. An add-on user license can only be purchased with a base subscription.

Extensive reliability and validity information is reported in the Interpretive and Technical Manual that accompanies the test. The 12-subtest Core Battery Full Scale reliability is .95 with the PASS Scale reliabilities ranging from .86 to .93. Internal consistency, test-retest, and scorer reliability studies were conducted. Types of validity reported include content description, criterion prediction, and construct identification. Validity with special populations, including persons with speech or language impairments, Learning Disabilities, gifted and talented designations, Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Anxiety Disorder, or Asperger’s Syndrome, is reported. Special attention was paid to making the CAS2 fair for minority groups. Validity evidence reported in the Interpretive and Technical Manual demonstrates the test’s value for assessment of diverse groups of children and adolescents.

The CAS2 was standardized using a group of 1,342 children and adolescents, closely representative of the population of the U.S. based on census data. The 12-subtest Core Battery Full Scale reliability is .95 with the PASS Scale reliabilities ranging from .86 to .93.
